Collect the smudge stick, a dish, ashtray or shell to catch the ashes, and matches or a lighter. A candle flame is often best because it can take time to get the stick smoking. The dish should be something that you don't mind getting dirty and won't break in response to heat.
Consider your intention before you smudge and hold it clearly in your mind. Pick a phrase that resonates with you.
Light the sage, then blow out the flame so the smudge stick is smoking, placing it into the dish. Start in the farthest room from the front door. Enter the room and go to the farthest corner to begin. Fan the smoke against the walls while saying or thinking your chosen thought. Move clockwise in the room, fanning the smoke, outlining the walls, corners, ceilings each door and window frame. Remember to smudge inside the closets. After the entire outside of the room is smudged, complete the room by going to the center of the room. Then smudge the hallway and move to the next room, until the entire house has been smudged.
When finished be sure that the smudge stick is not smoldering and the fire is completely out before storing.
